Online shopping for clothing, while seemingly easy, is actually quite the headache for the typical female consumer. According to an article by The New York Times, the lack of standardization in women’s sizing has led to large variances in sizes from store to store. “Take a woman with a 27-inch waist. IN Marc Jacob’s high-end line, she is between an 8 and a 10. At Chico’s, she is a triple 0.” What’s more, dress sizes have been irregular for decades. “A woman with a 32-inch bust would have worn a Size 14 in Sears’s 1937 catalog. By 1967, she would’ve worn an 8…Today, she would wear a zero.”

            Although sizing variance is not a new issue, it seems to be garnering more and more frustration as the popularity of online shopping grows, and to standardize women’s sizing now would be extremely expensive and a logistical nightmare. Unfortunately, this means a female online shopper trying to purchase an item from a clothing store (and doesn’t have a brick and mortar location near her) is almost flying blind. The sizing guides most online retailers provide are unhelpful at best, and reviews that provide feedback on the fit and cut of individual clothing items are few and far between.
