What Size Am I? The Online Shopping Struggle

Online shopping for clothing, while seemingly easy, is actually quite the headache for the typical female consumer. Unlike brick and mortar retailers, the consumer never comes face to face to a product they’re thinking about purchasing. This problem permeates the online shopping experience for both men and women, but the utter lack of standardization of women’s sizing makes it all the more difficult for female shoppers to find an item they like and fits well.

According to an article by The New York Times, the lack of standardization in women’s sizing has led to large variances in sizes from store to store. “Take a woman with a 27-inch waist. IN Marc Jacob’s high-end line, she is between an 8 and a 10. At Chico’s, she is a triple 0.” What’s more, dress sizes have been irregular for decades. “A woman with a 32-inch bust would have worn a Size 14 in Sears’s 1937 catalog. By 1967, she would’ve worn an 8…Today, she would wear a zero.”

Although sizing variance is not a new issue, it seems to be garnering more and more frustration as the popularity of online shopping grows, and to standardize women’s sizing now would be extremely expensive and a logistical nightmare. Unfortunately, this means a female online shopper trying to purchase an item from a clothing store (and doesn’t have a brick and mortar location near her) is almost flying blind. The sizing guides most online retailers provide are unhelpful at best, and reviews that provide feedback on the fit and cut of individual clothing items are few and far between.

That’s where Shop Simple comes in! Female shoppers can post about specific items and brands, like how they fit and what size they were, and other shoppers can learn from her experiences! This takes the guesswork out of shopping for clothing online, so women can fully enjoy the ease and freedom of virtual retail.

Online shopping has completely revolutionized the way many people shop. By going beyond brick and mortar stores, it allows shoppers the ease and freedom to find any product they desire at a price that's probably better than those of physical store fronts near many consumers, particularly clothing. However online shopping for clothing has a major roadblock when it comes to female shoppers: the inability to try things on prior to purchase. Clothing for women has a long history of struggling to standardize sizes, so while a woman could be an 8 in one store, she could be a 12 in another. Most sizing charts are entirely unhelpful, and with the costs of shipping and returning items that don't fit, a female customer may wind up paying more to buy and return and item than she did for the item itself! That's where Shop Simple comes in! This online shopping aid allows users to peruse the posts of other users about the fit and sizing from a multitude of brands. By learning what other women of similar build and size thought of the clothing of certain brands and items, female shoppers can take the guesswork out of the size and fit of what they buy online and enjoy the ease and freedom of online shopping once again!
